The U.S. Has Issued New Visa Criteria For Six Muslim Nations

Image
(WASHINGTON) — The Trump administration on Wednesday set new criteria for visa applicants from six mainly Muslim nations and all refugees that require a “close” family or business tie to the United States. The move came after the Supreme Court partially restored President Donald Trump’s executive order that was widely criticized as a ban on Muslims. Visas that have already been approved will not be revoked, but instructions issued by the State Department say that new applicants from Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Iran and Yemen must prove a relationship with a parent, spouse, child, adult son or daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law or sibling already in the United States to be eligible. The same requirement, with some exceptions, holds for would-be refugees from all nations that are still awaiting approval for admission to the U.S. Grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-laws and sisters-in-law, fiancees or other extended family members are no

EU hits Google with a record antitrust fine of $2.7 billion

Google has been fined a record 2.4 billion euros ($2.7 billion) after EU antitrust regulators concluded the first stage of their three-pronged probe into the world's most popular search engine. The fine, which targets the company's shopping business, is the largest doled out by Brussels for a monopoly abuse case and follows a seven-year-long investigation into the search group's practices. Investigations were triggered after the European Commission received dozens of complaints from U.S. and European competitors, who claimed that the company abused its search market dominance to give its Google Shopping service an advantage over other retailers and create a monopoly over consumers. Though the company was charged with distorting internet results by the EU competition authority in April 2015 it has not before faced fines for an abuse of this nature and marks something of a landmark for the way technology companies are regulated. The business has been given 90 days to c

Shoot the messenger: Russia likely to ban Telegram over use by terrorists

Image
On June 26, Russia's Federal Security Service announced  that the  April 3 terrorist attack  on the St. Petersburg metro, which left 16 people dead, was coordinated using the messaging app  Telegram. In a press release, the Security Service (FSB) said it had “reliable information about the use of  Telegram  by the suicide terrorist, his accomplices, and his foreign handler to conceal their criminal intentions at all stages of organizing and preparing the terrorist attack.” The statement echoed similar sentiments from the  US  and European  governments who have pushed for greater control over social media and messaging apps, arguing that they enable perpetrators to communicate and coordinate attacks. The announcement comes amid a broader effort by the Russian government to force the messaging app company to store users’ chat histories and private encryption keys on Russian soil. Recent statements from Aleksandr Zharov, the head of Roskomnadzor, the Russian state cens

Warren Buffett wants a big deal, but lately, he's settled for small ones

Image
It’s been a while since  Warren Buffett  struck a big deal, but that hasn’t kept him from settling for smaller trophies. On Monday,  investors  learned that the billionaire’s Berkshire Hathaway  made a $377-million bet on Store Capital, a real estate investment trust that largely caters to service businesses. (Think health clubs and preschools.) That transaction followed a similar-sized agreement last week to prop up Home Capital Group, an embattled Canadian home lender.   Buffett’s imprimatur as one of the world’s savviest investors  sent the value of both businesses soaring, earning Berkshire quick paper profits. Still, the transactions do little to resolve a nagging challenge: His firm is sitting on a record amount of cash. “Shareholders are much more concerned with what Buffett will do with the $100 billion in his wallet” than these deals, said David Rolfe, a fund manager who oversees about $6.5 billion, including Berkshire stock.   For the past five decades, Buf

According to a new study, premature infants still have a greater risk compared to full-term babies of dying of sudden infant death syndrome  (SIDS) and other sleep-related infant deaths. Barbara Ostfeld, professor of pediatrics at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and program director of the SIDS Center of New Jersey, said, "While we can't undo a preterm birth, we can help compensate for the accompanying elevated risk of sudden infant death syndrome  and other sleep-related infant deaths by helping families adopt the beneficial practices that include putting an infant on his back to sleep and keeping the sleep environment clutter free." The scientists found that infants born between 24 to 27 weeks had a more than three times higher chance than babies born full term of dying before their first birthday of a sudden unexpected infant death, which is comprised of SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths. The risk was high, according to researchers, e

Apple iPhone 8 will have a brand new design, several leaks confirm

Image
As the launch date of iPhone is nearing, a new  leak  has reportedly "confirmed" the iPhone 8's brand new design. Following several leaks about Apple's controversial yet virtually bezel-less redesign, OnLeaks has obtained detailed iPhone 8 dummy models which confirm that the devices to be launched in September would have an elongated 18.5:9 aspect ratio like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, Forbes reported. It would also reduce bezel sizes to just 4mm on all sides and feature a vertically aligned rear camera, the report added. The rear dual- camera  system on the iPhone 8 would protrude more than ever before. Earlier leaks have suggested  design  changes in detail. They also pointed out that the 2017 device would have an all-display front with fingerprint scanner moved to the back. According to a revelation by  Chinese  site iPhoneros, the iPhone 8 would compete with the likes of  Samsung  Galaxy S8 and LG G6 displays. The move makes sense as

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi Meet, Donald Trump Endorses India's Stand On China-Pak Corridor

New Delhi: During his visit to the White House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won the endorsement of the US on India's objections to China's massive initiative to open land and sea corridors that connect it to Central Asia. Referring to the meeting between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump, the joint statement that lists their shared goals and values said, "The two leaders support bolstering regional economic connectivity through the transparent development of infrastructure ... while ensuring respect for sovereignty  and territorial integrity, ...and call on other nations in the region to adhere to these principle." India has objected to China's "new Silk Road" project, because part of it, an economic corridor, runs through Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The government has said the construction and plans violate "India's territorial sovereignty", which the US appears to have accepted.

Destroying Mosul's Great Mosque: Islamic State's symbolic war to the end

On June 29 2014 – nearly three years ago to the day – Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi  took the pulpit at the  Great Mosque  of  Al-Nuri  in Mosul in northern Iraq. He announced the creation of a new Islamic State  that stretched across the borders of Iraq and Syria. Declaring himself Caliph Ibrahim, the leader of all Muslims, he implored the faithful from across the world to make the pilgrimage to come and serve. Yesterday, in the midst of what are likely to be the final stages in the Battle for Mosul, the Islamic State appears to have  destroyed the Great Mosque of Al-Nuri  and its iconic leaning minaret. As the Iraqi poet  Ahmed Zaidan  has said, the  Great Mosque  was not only a significant cultural heritage site for Muslims in general, but it was also regarded as an essential part of the Mosul skyline - a symbol of the city’s long past and diverse communities. The building itself was erected in 1172 by the great Nur Al-Din ibn Zengi (1118-1174), widely regarded as the man who launched

Iran's Rouhani backs Qatar, rejects "siege"

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani voiced support on Sunday for Qatar in its confrontation with Iran's rival Saudi Arabia and its allies, saying a "siege of Qatar is unacceptable", the state news agency IRNA reported. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain cut ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of support for militants, an allegation Qatar denies. They have since issued 13 demands including closing Al Jazeera television, curbing relations with Iran, shutting a Turkish base and paying reparations. "Tehran stands with the Qatari nation and government... We believe that if there is a conflict between regional countries, pressure, threats or sanctions are not the right way to resolve differences," IRNA quoted Rouhani as telling Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, in a telephone call. "The siege of Qatar is unacceptable to us... The airspace, land and sea of our country will always be open to Qatar as a brotherly and ne

Hacking group believes NASA will announce discovery of aliens

Anonymous -- the loose collective of hackers and online activists -- claims that the US space agency NASA is all set to announce the discovery of alien life, the media reported. In a video on the issue, Anonymous has cited several other alien-friendly comments made by astronauts and space exploration enthusiasts in the past, as well as various alien and UFO 'sightings' as evidence that "something is going on in the skies above". Anonymous's claim is based on a number of recent NASA discoveries coupled with comments made by one of the agency's spokesmen during a Congressional hearing in April titled 'Advances in the Search for Life', "NASA's recent advances, such as the discovery of hydrogen in Saturn's moon Enceladus and the Hubble team's promising results from the oceans of Jupiter's moon Europa, are promising signs that we're closer than ever to discovering evidence of alien life," Professor Thomas Zurbuchen, Associa

Emirati princesses convicted in Belgium for human trafficking

Eight Emirati princesses were convicted of human trafficking by a Belgian court on Friday and were given suspended jail terms and fines in a case stemming from their treatment of servants at a Brussels luxury hotel nearly 10 years ago, their lawyer said. The Brussels criminal court handed the eight women from Abu Dhabi's ruling al-Nahyan family 15-month suspended sentences for human trafficking and degrading treatment, the lawyer, Stephen Monod, said. He said the defence was pleased the case was finally resolved after nearly a decade. "Belgian justice has appropriately assessed this case which has generated many misconceptions," he said in a statement. The defendants were acquitted of the more serious charge of inhuman treatment but also ordered to pay a fine of 165,000 euros ($184,000), with half the sum suspended. The eight accused did not appear in court throughout the proceedings. The case was brought after a servant of the family slipped out of the hotel wher
